The Council of Elrond

The Council of Elrond, held in Rivendell on October 25, 3018, is the central deliberative event of the War of the Ring. It is the moment when the fragmented peoples of Middle-earth, each bearing their own grievances and fears, are forced to confront the unified peril of Sauron and to decide the fate of the One Ring. The Council is not a formal parliament but an assembly of the willing, called by Elrond, who declares that its members have been brought together "by chance as it may seem. Yet it is not so." The meeting transforms a collection of individual quests and warnings into a single, desperate mission: the destruction of the Ring.

The Gathering and the Tale of the Ring

The Council assembles in the open porch of Elrond's house, a setting that contrasts the grave deliberations with the peaceful beauty of Rivendell. Present are Elrond, Gandalf, Frodo Baggins, Bilbo Baggins, Glóin the Dwarf with his son Gimli, Glorfindel the Elf-lord, Erestor and Galdor as counsellors, Legolas the Elf from Mirkwood, Boromir of Gondor, and Aragorn, the Ranger who is revealed as the heir of Isildur. Elrond begins by recounting the history of Sauron and the Rings of Power, from their forging in the Second Age to the Last Alliance and the loss of the One Ring. He speaks of Númenor, its glory and fall, and the founding of the realms in exile. His memory reaches back to the Elder Days, for he was the herald of Gil-galad and witnessed the final combat on the slopes of Orodruin where Isildur cut the Ring from Sauron's hand. This long history establishes the Ring not as a mere weapon but as a living embodiment of Sauron's will, a thing that cannot be used without being corrupted.

The Testimony of the Bearer and the Hunt for Gollum

Frodo then tells his own story, from the moment the Ring passed into his keeping through every step of his journey from Hobbiton to the Ford of Bruinen. His account is questioned and examined, particularly concerning the Black Riders. Gandalf follows with the tale of his own imprisonment by Saruman at Orthanc, his rescue by Gwaihir the Eagle, and his discovery that Saruman had turned traitor, seeking the Ring for himself. Gandalf also reveals that he has learned from Gollum that the creature was taken to Mordor and forced to reveal what he knew, meaning Sauron now knows the Ring has been found and that it was long in the Shire. This news casts a shadow over the assembly, confirming that the Enemy is actively hunting for the Ring and that time is desperately short.

The Debate: To Use, to Hide, or to Destroy

The Council debates what to do with the Ring. Boromir, speaking for Gondor, argues that the Ring should be used as a weapon against the Enemy, a tool for victory. Elrond and Gandalf firmly reject this, explaining that the Ring cannot be wielded for good; it would corrupt any user, turning even the wisest into a new Dark Lord. Glorfindel suggests casting the Ring into the Sea, but Gandalf counters that it would not be safe forever, as seas and lands may change. The only remaining course, as Elrond declares, is to destroy the Ring in the Cracks of Doom, the fiery chasm where it was made. This path leads into the heart of Mordor itself, a journey that seems impossible. The Council falls silent, the weight of the decision pressing on all present.

The Decision and the Formation of the Fellowship

In the heavy silence, Frodo speaks. "I will take the Ring," he says, "though I do not know the way." His offer is made with full awareness of the peril, and Elrond accepts it, stating that this task is appointed for the Shire-folk. Samwise Gamgee, who has been eavesdropping, bursts out that he will not let Frodo go alone, and Elrond confirms that Sam shall go with him. The Council then decides that the Company of the Ring shall be nine, set against the Nine Riders. Gandalf will go as the leader, and the other Free Peoples are represented: Legolas for the Elves, Gimli for the Dwarves, and Aragorn and Boromir for Men. Merry and Pippin insist on joining, and Elrond reluctantly agrees, completing the Nine. The Council ends with the decision made and the Quest formally begun, though the path ahead remains shrouded in uncertainty and fear.
